Thesis vs dissertation: the difference in the UK and US
The two words swap meanings across the Atlantic, which is why advice online contradicts itself. Here is what each one means, and which your university expects.
In the UK, a dissertation is the extended project at the end of an undergraduate or taught master's degree, and a thesis is the longer piece of original research submitted for a research degree such as an MPhil or PhD. Use the right word in your own writing
Follow your university. The handbook, the regulations and the submission portal will use one term consistently, and your title page and abstract should match it. If your department calls the project a dissertation, a title page that says thesis looks as if it came from another institution.
The same care helps outside university. On a CV for a UK employer, dissertation signals an undergraduate or master's project. When applying to a US programme, add the level and length, such as a 15,000 word master's dissertation, so nobody assumes you are describing a doctorate.
