Using Google Scholar for academic research
Excellent for discovery, inadequate for systematic searching. Here is how to get the most from it and when to stop relying on it.
Almost every student uses Google Scholar and almost none use more than the search box. Five features turn it from a search engine into a research tool, and one limitation decides when you need something else.
Set up library links first
This takes two minutes and is the single most useful change you can make.
- Open Settings, then Library links
- Search for your university and tick it
- Add the Open Access Button and CORE while you are there
- Save
A "Find it @ [your university]" link now appears beside every result your library subscribes to. Students routinely hit paywalls for papers their institution already pays for, simply because this was never enabled.
Search operators that work

Scholar has no truncation. depress* does not work, so you must write the variants out with OR. This is one of the clearest signs that it is a consumer search tool rather than an academic database.
Cited by, and searching forwards
Reference lists take you backwards in time. "Cited by" takes you forwards, which is where the recent work is.
The technique that works:
- Find one genuinely central paper on your topic
- Click "Cited by"
- Tick "Search within citing articles" and add a narrowing term
- Sort or filter by date to surface the last two years
That sequence finds recent work building directly on a foundation you already trust, which is far more efficient than keyword searching a whole field.
Alerts
Create an alert on your core search terms and Scholar emails you when new matching work appears. On a project running six months or more this is close to essential: it means your literature review is still current at submission rather than at the point you stopped reading.
Exporting citations
Under Settings, set your bibliography manager to BibTeX, EndNote or RefMan and an import link appears on every result. Combined with Zotero, this gets a reference into your library in one click.
Check what it imports. Scholar's metadata is frequently wrong on capitalisation, edition and organisational authors, and those errors go straight into your reference list.
Where Google Scholar falls down

What to use alongside it
- Scopus and Web of Science: multidisciplinary, with proper citation tracking
- PubMed: health and biomedical, free, with MeSH headings
- CINAHL: nursing and allied health
- PsycINFO: psychology
- ERIC: education, free
- JSTOR: humanities and social sciences, strong on older material
A workable approach
- Start in Scholar to find the shape of the field and identify key papers
- Use "Cited by" on those papers to reach recent work
- Move to a subject database for the systematic portion of the search
- Return to Scholar to chase full text for anything the database will not give you
- Set an alert so the review stays current while you write
Scholar is a superb discovery tool and a poor systematic one. Used for what it is good at, it will save you weeks.

Frequently asked questions
Search with quoted phrases and Boolean operators, filter by date, use "Cited by" to find newer work, and connect it to your university library so full-text links appear. Treat it as a discovery tool rather than your only database.
For a narrative review, often yes, alongside one subject database. For a systematic review, no: Scholar cannot produce a reproducible search because its results are personalised and its coverage is undocumented.
Set your library links in Scholar settings. Add your university and a "Find it @ [your university]" link appears beside results your library subscribes to. Most students never enable this and pay for papers they already have access to.
It lists later work that has cited that paper, letting you move forwards through a literature rather than backwards through reference lists. It is the fastest way to find recent work on an established topic.
Systematic reviews require a search another researcher could repeat exactly. Scholar personalises results, does not publish its coverage, caps results at around 1,000, and offers no proper export of a full result set.
